JAMAICA!! MEETS SLY & THE FAMILY DRONE

‘Celebrating The End Together In The Good Time Swamp’ c46 Cassette

Having released a few CDR's of these sessions and played a few well received gigs on London's experimental scene Jamaica!! were asked to host a night at the ICA as part of Morag Keil's solo exhibition there (Morag has a long-term relationship with the Gate) and thinking that Sly & the Family Drone had a history of communal music-making and a similar musical ethos they were an obvious choice for collaboration for us and we were extremely pleased that they took us up on the offer we presented them . A late edition to the ensemble was Alan Courtis, another long term friend of the Gate who just happened to be in London and expressed an interest in joining us.

Sly & The Family Drone present this special art edition of our collaboration with Jamaica!! With the aim of raising money for The Gate, an arts centre for adults with learning disabilities located in Shepherds Bush, London.

The night itself, the recording of which is presented here, was a glorious affair with much fun being had by all involved and for me personally was testament to the power of a truly inclusive embracive "joyful noise". – Arlo Yates 2021

There is a distinct symbiosis between everyone onstage, and not only when there are eight drummers conjuring an acoustic barrage of Boredoms-level intensity’ – Wire,2019

What about Opera? plus Arlo's farewell

 Hey guys,

In this episode, our presenters talk about their preferences for Opera an art form that is seeing as quite far away from the popular taste but Labake would love to learn how to sing it. We listened to a bit of Charlotte Church and Jessy Norman.

We took the opportunity to say goodbye to Arlo Yates, who was The Gate Manager for many years, who changed everything for good.  He pushed every possible barrier to give the Gate's artists the opportunity to show their art in venues, art galleries and festivals outside of the social care circuit, which used to be the place where these artists were confined before his arrival.  Under his management, The Gate has hold shows and exhibitions in prestigious cultural centres, art galleries and festivals such as ICA London, Cafe Oto, Royal Festival Hall, London Jazz Festival, Arcadia Misa Gallery and Sonic Protest Festival in Paris, to mention a few.  Arlo was behind in the formation of the improvisation music ensemble Jamaica!! which has done gigs at prestigious venues such the Iklectik, Cafe Oto and ICA, releasing several works on record labels such as Takuroku and with Sly and Family Drone on Bandcamp, one of their tracks was included in The Wire magazine as part of the selection made by Alan Courtis for the Global Ear online section.  So we wish all the best to Arlo in his new adventure. Mr Amazing, Labake and MC Top Richie made a song to say goodbye to him. A big hug for him!!

Welcome to the super creative world of Labake Anisere, aka Baby Killer, a unique singer and Learning Disability rights activist.

Hi GateKickers!!

Welcome to the world of the super creative singer and learning disability rights activist Labake Anisere, aka Baby Killer.

A daughter of Nigerian immigrants, Labake was born in Fulham, so she supports Chelsea FC. After an accident, she is diagnosed with learning and physical disabilities. Despite all the odds, she became the mother of three wonderful children.   Her music comes from real-life experiences but also from her family influences and dreams.  One of her dreams inspired the surrealistic lyrics of Does Jesus Sleep?. We will listen to songs connected with social issues such as "Buried Knives, not People" to stop knife crime;  "I've got a Body" talks about how disabled people can overcome vulnerability in the streets or "Cannibal" a song which comes from her character Baby Killer in the new video game, Gate Station, where she remembers being bullied in the school so she just eats bullies.

I invite you to explore the beauty and honesty of her music and discover a parallel world.

So seat, wear your headphones, relax and play Gate Kicks to connect to a different dimension.

The Gate Station Welcome to Our Video Game

Recently as a result of the Covid pandemic we were forced into an online model of working with our members (along with regular socially distanced welfare visits for those who needed it) and like many we were forced to reevaluate and revise our working practices in order to accommodate this. One manifestation of this is the work presented here.

The video game began as an in-person project prior to the pandemic as a number of people who attend the gate are into gaming, the idea was to make a real-time game that represented life at The Gate. We took this idea and adapted it to the online situation, using the tool Twinery. Twinery is an open-source tool that allows people to make interactive fiction in the form of a webpage.

The story has been developed over the art sessions we hold, with people coming up with ideas and narratives that expand the game into the maze that it currently is. The artists at that gate have their own pages within the game, for example, Duane’s world which features his TikTok videos and music that he has made over lockdown. These are incorporated into the narrative of the game which is horror fiction. There is also a page dedicated to a service user who died during the lockdown, this allowed the artist to compile their memories of Leon and the art he had made into one place that's also linked with the art they are currently making. The graphics for the game have been designed in online sessions with artists co-editing via share screen functions.

Space Edition discovering Mr Amazing's music planet

Hey Guys, Today this Space Edition discovering Mr Amazing's music planet, yeah. Duane aka Mr Amazing is one of our beloved radio presenters. During the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, he got bored and started to explore his parents home looking for musical objects, of course the handiest one was his mobile phone hahaha, a small keyboard, unusual kitchen appliances such as his microwave, Google samplers, he added a pinch of his hip-hoppy romantic and existential lyrics, he mixed, stirred and shaked everything... et voila!! you got something so unique that cannot be categorized in any place within this planet. Mr Amazing has played in the impro band Jamaica! which is based at The Gate, he has taken part in many live shows including Cafe Oto, ICA, and the Green Door in Brighton. He has made music along with Labake and MC Top Richie. These songs are in a raw state, they have not been produced or touch by any third party is just Mr Amazing alone in his home for this reason these songs are so valuable. Seat, Relax and Listen to Mr Amazing's music... you will be amazed!!! Playlist: Artillery;Aubameyan and lacazette; Berzek; Big Pappa; Blinded by your Graze; Bookey; Butterflies; Crocodille teeth freestyle; Don't push my love; Straight Facts.

Gate Kicks presents the music of Mr Amazing

 Hey guys,

This episode is devoted to the music made by one of our Gate Kicks' presenters, Duane Warner aka Mr Amazing. He has collaborated on different music projects such as the impro ensemble Jamaica and other Gate's bands as a singer and bass player. He is from West London, an Arsenal football team supporter.   Mr Amazing, as most of us, has been isolated at home where he was bored with his daily routine, so using domestic objects from his kitchen, a small keyboard, and his mobile phone, he started to experiment recording samplers and making music on the spot. He shared some of these tracks with our audio wizard Lindsay Corstorphine, aliases Beehive Pines and Oblate, who has been responsible for the sound production. Mr Amazing's music is surprisingly creative, it could be tagged as experimental or avant-garde with hip-hop, funk, soul, and electronic music influences. On his tracks, you will find our Gate Kicks' co-presenters,  Labake Anisere and Richie aka MC Top Richie. I'm sure that you will be AMAZED by Mr Amazing's music, sincerely, he should be a rock star.

Gate Kicks! Meets Radio Tisto.

Hey Joe!!
As a continuation of our previous episode, when we met Franq de Quengo, co-director of the most important inclusive avant-garde festival in the world Sonic protest, members of the French band Les Harry's broadcast a special edition of Radio Tisto on 3rd March 2021 for Resonance's audience. The history of this band and Radio Tisto started in 2013 when Sonic Protest invited Alan Courtis to lead an improvisation workshop with six autistic adults from the group ‘Radio and Music’ at the day hospital of Antony (through the association l’Elan Retrouvé), then Les Harry’s and a bi-monthly radio show Radio Tisto on Radio Libertaire, which is a famous anarchist independent radio in Paris, were born...the rest is history.
Jamaica! sent to them a file with their latest recording released by Cafe Oto record label Takuroku called Leon and Les Harry's made a wonderful improvisation over it, the voice and music reminds me of many works by my favourite British avant-garde musician Robert Wyatt from Soft Machine and his solo career from The End of an Ear and Matching Mole. For further information about Radio Tisto please click here.

The Government has responded to the petition you signed.

Government responded:

We are working hard to ensure everyone who has been clinically prioritised to receive a vaccine will have access to a vaccine as soon as possible.

The NHS has been working alongside its health and social care partners to ensure the vaccine can be administered safely and effectively as part of the largest vaccination programme undertaken in its history.

An enormous amount of work has taken place to ensure we have the logistical expertise, transport and workforce to roll out a vaccine according to clinical priority, at the speed at which it can be manufactured. Over 8.9 million people across the UK have now received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and nearly half a million have received their second dose. There are now over 2700 sites across the UK already offering vaccines to those at risk by age and clinical priority. The network will continue to expand and evolve as we progress the deployment in the months ahead. We will expand the programme so all adults can be vaccinated by the autumn.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) is the independent medical and scientific expert body which advises the UK Government on prioritisation for all vaccines. The committee’s membership is made up of practising clinicians and individuals from academia who have considered and continue to consider the impact of Covid-19 and population prioritisation as new data emerges.

For phase one of the vaccine roll-out, the underlying principles at the forefront of the advice by the JCVI are; to reduce mortality, to protect the health and social care systems, and to save lives. Given the current epidemiological situation in the UK, all evidence indicates that the best option for preventing mortality in the initial phase of the programme is to directly protect persons most at risk. Having identified age as being the biggest determining factor to increased mortality, vaccinations have been prioritised to care home residents and staff and those over 80, followed by health and social care workers, then to the rest of the population in order of age and clinical risk factors.

In line with JCVI recommendations, individuals with chronic neurological diseases, including those with severe and profound learning disabilities and Down’s Syndrome will be prioritised for a vaccine, as there is good evidence that these underlying health conditions increase the risk of morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. Adults with Down’s Syndrome are considered to be clinically extremely vulnerable and therefore will be eligible also be eligible for a vaccine in priority group four (alongside those 70 years of age and over). Adults with severe and profound learning disabilities are included in priority group six, alongside those with certain underlying health conditions increase the risk of morbidity and mortality from COVID-19, as set out by the JCVI.

By 15 February we aim to have offered a first vaccine dose to everyone in the top four priority groups identified by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI):

• all residents in a care home for older adults and their carers

• all those 80 years of age and over and frontline health and social care workers

• all those 75 years of age and over

• all those 70 years of age and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals

Individuals eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination will receive an invitation to come forward when it is their turn. For most people this will be in the form of a letter either from their GP or the national booking system; this will include all the information they need, including their NHS number.

Public Health England (PHE) has developed a range of COVID-19 resources for the public. These resources incorporate learning and evidence from behavioural science, attitudinal surveys and previous flu programmes. This includes resources for those with a learning disability (including invitation letters, posters, information leaflets and videos). These have been developed in collaboration with NHS England and Improvement and those with lived experience. PHE has published the first of three Easy Read guides: COVID-19 vaccination - a guide for people with a learning disability and their carers leaflet. This is available here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-vaccination-easy-read-resources

The NHS has a tried and tested track record for delivering vaccination programmes and will work with existing partners across the healthcare system to ensure a Covid-19 vaccine can be deployed safely and effectively. The government is working hard to ensure everyone who has been clinically prioritised to receive a vaccine will have access to a vaccine as soon as possible.
